Phonics and Reading

At St Herbert’s, we aim to create a firm foundation for a lifetime of learning by establishing excellent decoding skills and reading comprehension to enable all children to become fluent, confident and capable readers who have a genuine love of reading. 

At St Herbert’s, we use Read, Write Inc to teach early reading and spelling.  

Writing

At St Herbert’s, we aim to create a firm foundation for a lifetime of learning by establishing excellent early communication skills to enable all children to become fluent, confident and capable writers, speakers and listeners.

As writing is a key life skill, we promote daily writing opportunities so that children can successfully write for a range of audiences and purposes.

Supporting your child with reading

Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home.

Your child will be given a reading practice book to take home. This will be at the correct phonics stage for their ability and they should be able to read this fluently and independently.

We encourage regular reading at school and at home to develop a love of literature.
